Material recovery planning
Material recovery planning
Careful planning saves natural resources by allowing waste and side streams to be efficiently recovered.
Material recovery planning
The purpose of material recovery planning is to make efficient use of waste and side streams and to save natural resources in accordance with the principles of circular economy. The planning covers the recycling and reuse of materials and the utilisation of by-products, which reduces both environmental impacts and costs.
Ash, slag, waste rock, tailings and sludge are examples of industrial waste materials. New structures can be created from waste streams – slag, for instance, can be made into road or field structures. Waste can also be utilised in construction, a good example being various composts and substrates. Risk assessment is an essential part of investigating the recovery of waste; it is used to determine the conditions for recovery and assess the environmental impact.
Essential factors to consider when planning material recovery
Objectives of material recovery planning
Conservation of natural resources
To reduce the need for virgin raw materials and save natural resources
Reducing waste
To direct materials to recycling and reuse instead of disposal
Minimising life cycle impacts
To reduce the environmental impact of material streams throughout their life cycle
Cost savings
To reduce costs by reusing and recycling instead of sourcing new raw materials
Sustainable development and promotion of circular economy
To create long-lasting solutions that support economic, ecological and social sustainability
